No dog is exactly like yours — and the same goes for their nutritional needs.
All dogs need a balanced intake of energy and essential nutrients, but it’s your dog’s individual characteristics, lifestyle, and possible sensitivities that determine the optimal diet.
Henna Söderholm, Veterinarian, PhD, co-founder and Head of Product at Alvar Pet, guides you through the jungle of dog food options and shares practical tips on how to think about nutrition for your sensitive dog.
Feeding a sensitive dog can be challenging, but here are 5 steps to finding the right food:
1. Find a Suitable Protein Source
Food allergies are typically caused by the protein in the food. When choosing food for your sensitive dog, it’s a good idea to look for innovative protein sources that your dog hasn’t eaten before.
Example: Insect-based dry food. Insect protein has proven to be a great option for sensitive dogs.
2. Look for a Short Ingredient List
Dog food with a simple, short ingredient list can help you rule out potential allergens in your dog’s diet. No specific ingredients should be avoided “just in case” — it always depends on your dog’s unique situation.
3. Focus on the Whole Diet
Pay attention to what else your dog is consuming besides their main food. Prioritize chew treats made with single animal proteins and natural dog snacks with carefully selected ingredients.
Example: Natural chews made with monoprotein, such as elk or fish.
4. Consider the Properties of the Food
Symptoms of sensitivity — apart from allergies — can also be related to the food’s properties. Itchy skin, for example, may improve with a higher intake of omega fatty acids. A dog showing signs of acid reflux might feel better on a diet lower in fat.
5. Get Help
If you suspect food-related sensitivity, consult a veterinarian for guidance. They can recommend feeding trials or other diagnostics to help identify the source of your dog’s reaction.
